One of my favorite things about March is the Minnesota state high school league boys hockey tournament. It’s the best time of the year, especially when you live in the State of Hockey. We Minnesotans live for the sport and my dad, sister and I are crazy about it.
The games are extremely competitive and there’s drama–lots of drama. Emotions run high at the tourney, and not just for the boys on the ice. The kids who attend get wild (and some adults too). But the hockey is the main attraction. Competing for the state title is a big deal in Minnesota and something these hockey kids don’t take lightly. A lot of these high school students are already committed to colleges to play hockey after graduation and there are college recruiters at the games. To me, the tourney experience is better than any NHL game.
My dad, sister and I have teams that we always look forward to seeing. Edina and Duluth East always bring some interesting elements to the tourney — and they’re two teams that are crazy talented. This year we enjoyed seeing them, Lakeville North and Lake Minnetonka. It was one of the best tourneys I’ve experienced.
We watched most of the games from home and went to the Xcel Energy Center for the class AA Championship Saturday game — which was amazing. Duluth East played Lake Minnetonka, and it was intense. I went to the game cheering on the Duluth Greyhounds, but left a Minnetonka Skippers fan. They are such a tight team that is consistent, precise and quick on their skates. The team has great technique that’s inspiring to witness.
Lake Minnetonka beat Duluth 5-2 for their first state title. The attendance for Saturday night’s Class AA final was 18,914 and the total attendance for all four days of the tournament (both class A and AA) was 107,674. Which is awesome because that’s more people than some NHL games get!
I love this tradition with my dad and sister. It’s so fun going to the games together and having something we all enjoy and can do together. My cousin Julia has also been coming with us the last few years too, which has been SO FUN. I love hanging out with her and her energy. Cheering on hockey games with her is the best!
But let’s be real, the best thing about the tourney is the hockey hair — it’s basically as great as the games. Watch this video by Game On! Minnesota to see why:
