Charlie Puth brought his Voicenotes Tour to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN on Wednesday. The 26-year-old singer came ready to steal hearts, woo a crowd and entertain thousands, all while singing in perfect pitch and playing a variety of instruments.
The star impressed many with his skills, but also reminded them throughout the night that he’s just a boy who’s musically geeky, charmingly awkward and a bit into himself–not quite cocky or arrogant, but full of a bold outward confidence that adds to his stage presence and personality. Clearly years of training at prestigious school Berklee College of Music has prepared him for moments like this.
Puth performed 17 songs. Most of them were from his new album Voicenotes. My favorites live were “How Long,” “Empty Cups,” “LA Girls,” “Somebody Told Me” and “Boy.” Those were the most fun to sing and dance along to, but the whole concert was great and each song sounded even better live versus the album–which, I’ve discovered from attending many shows, is often a rarity.
Puth never fails to impress. It was my third time seeing him and his talent always appears to flow effortlessly. That boy can sing, and really well. He also knows the craft of his instruments, inside and out. Charlie Puth is a musician I continue to admire–especially considering how he produced his album Voicenotes.
Surprisingly, Puth didn’t use fancy recording studios to create Voicenotes. Instead, he made most of the music from his home on Pro Tools and the iPhone app Voicenotes (which is where the inspiration for the album’s name originated from). It was neat to see how he brought the album to life during his St. Paul show and as his voice echoed throughout the room and fans sang along, it was evident the music was made for an arena stage setting.
I give Puth’s Voicenotes Tour a full 10/10. You have to see him live, even if you only know a few of his songs. Tickets for his tour are inexpensive and are totally worth it. My sister, cousin, friend and I all had a blast. When he comes to town again, I’ll definitely be there! It was the perfect girls night!
